5 Of The Best Travel Laptops In 2020

Whether you need to work on your travels or just want to stream movies on the go, a quality laptop is an essential accessory. We have researched the range of options available on the market today and selected the laptops we think are best suited for travel to suit every budget and need.

Our selection is based primarily on reviews from influential tech magazines and other authorities such as Techradar, Laptopmag and The Wire Cutter. In addition to making decisions based on overall performance, special consideration was given to traveler-related factors such as weight, battery length and display brightness.
Best overall notebook. Dell XPS 13 (2020 Edition)

The Dell XPS 13 regularly tops the charts for “ultra-portable” laptops. It weighs just 2.8 pounds (1.27 kilograms), is very thin and light (0.58 inches/14.8mm), and will last for over 12 hours on a full battery charge. Combined with fast performance and fantastic display levels, the XPS 13 is our top recommendation for travelers. The only minor drawback is the audio aspect, which isn’t as good as it could be since Dell puts the speakers on the bottom of the laptop. However, since most travelers use headphones to receive audio from their laptops, this isn’t an obvious drawback.

Best Budget Friendly Overall Notebook. Acer Swift 3 (2019 Edition)

If the Dell XPS 13 is a bit too expensive for your tastes, then the Acer Swift would be our next – and significantly cheaper – recommendation. It’s a little heavier than the XPS 13 (3.05 pounds), but has a decent 10-hour battery life and is still great for travel. Its display is by and large very good, though not as sharp as the XPS 13, and coupled with its strong performance, it’s enough to say that the Acer Swift 3 is, on the whole, the most cost-effective laptop on our list.

Best MacBook.MacBook Air 2020

For those who love macOS, the new MacBook Air will be our first choice. While it’s not as powerful as the best Windows laptops, it’s certainly adequate for the average traveler’s basic needs (web browsing, Word, Netflix streaming, etc.) In addition, the MacBook Air has a very good display and almost the best sound experience you can find. It’s also worth noting that the new keyboard feels much better for typing compared to its recent predecessors. The battery can last at least 9 hours on a full charge, and at just 2.8 pounds, the MacBook Air is also one of the lightest laptops on the market.

Best Chromebooks: HP Chromebook x360 14

If most of your laptop activity revolves around online browsing, then Chromebooks may be a good, and more affordable, alternative to traditional laptops.Chromebooks run Google’s operating system, not Windows, which is similar to Google’s Chrome browser. While you can’t download programs like you can on Windows, all new Chromebooks can now download Android apps through the Google Play Store. Among the many Chromebooks available today, the HP x360 14 is the first choice of most experts. It’s lightweight, offers long battery life and performance comparable to more expensive standard laptops. The only downside is the display, which is a little too dark in bright environments.

Best Convertible Laptop: HP Spectre x360 13
This convertible notebook (also known as a “two-in-one” notebook) can be converted from a laptop to a tablet and back again thanks to a 360-degree hinge that rotates the notebook’s screen all the way around, flat against the bottom of the keyboard. If you watch a lot of movies on the plane or train, the 2-in-1 can be converted to “tent mode” (see picture) for a better viewing experience. The HP Spectre gets good reviews overall and is our favorite notebook in this category. Compared to other conversion laptops, it’s fairly light and compact, with a 13.3-inch touchscreen and a battery life of at least 14 hours. The performance and display scores are also excellent.
