Punta Gorda Airport, located 5 km east of Punta Gorda, Charlotte County, Florida (PGD), has recently seen a healthy increase in activity at the airport, with many low-cost flights currently operated by Allegiant Air in and around the area.
The car rental center is conveniently located across the street from the Bailey Terminal. There are seven major car rental companies in the center, most of which open for business as early as 5 a.m.
To determine which car rental company offers the best vehicles in our three categories (most affordable, best for luxury cars, best for minivans), TravelMag.com took a close look at the prices, availability, policies, and customer reviews of car rental companies outside of the PGD airport. Here are the results of our research.
Most Affordable: Hertz and Alamo
For cheap car rentals, we found that Hertz and the Alamo have the best deals in this category. On our sample date, Hertz had the Fiat 500 at a little under $46 per day, while Alamo had the Mitsubishi Mirage at $47 per day or at $65 per day with a GPS rental, free fuel in the tank, and no extra cost for any additional driver over the age of 25. Alamo offers a similar package for additional drivers between the ages of 21 and 24, but their price goes up to $81 per day.
Best suited for luxury: budget and enterprise level
There is a large selection of luxury vehicles available at Punta Gorda Airport and all major operators offer competitive deals. On our sample date, Budget had a Ford Edge for a respectable $56 per day. The latest Edge models have state-of-the-art systems, including “adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centering”. For a more spacious and mature vehicle, the Enterprise’s Chevrolet Tahoe offers big V-8 performance and a smooth, comfortable ride. In early spring, they are quoted at $82/day.
Best for minivans: Alamo and State
From driving to the Great Everglades National Park, to hitting the beaches and backstreets of downtown Miami, there are plenty of fun things to do and see in Florida. If you are traveling in a group of seven or less in the area, we recommend the Alamo’s Dodge Caravan, at $56, which works out at just $8 per person. If Alamo is out of stock, then almost all other rental companies at Punta Gorda Airport have the same car at similar prices. For something bigger, National rented a Ford All-Shirt for less than $100 a day.
