Located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 22 miles from Lake Tahoe, Reno is known locally as “the world’s largest small city.” Traditionally a hotspot for skiers and hikers, the area has recently become a major tech hub, attracting companies like Amazon, Tesla, Apple and Google. Just east of Reno is the city of Sparks. With the slogan “It’s Happening Here”, the city of Sparks boasts several tourist attractions, including the Sparks Marina, Nugget Casino Resort and Scheels – the largest all-sports store in the world.
For those who want to explore the area around Reno, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, we’ve done a multifaceted comparison of car rental companies.
Such as opening hours, available vehicles and, of course, daily rates. Here are some of our favorites.
Renault Airport: United States dollars
Reno-Tahoe International Airport has nine different car rental companies that pick up cars just outside the terminal. Of all the companies that operate here, we chose Dol-lar as the standout. With the Chevy Spark priced at $45/day, the Nissan Sentra at $50, and the Hyundai Accent at a few dollars, there are plenty of economy options, and for another $20, you can leave in a Buick Regal or Chrysler 300. This outlet scored particularly high on pickup speed and fleet cleanliness. Hours of operation: Monday to Sunday, 6 a.m. to midnight.
Downtown Reno: Hertz
Whether you’re taking a chance on a casino in downtown Reno or want to get out and explore the great outdoors, car rentals are the best way to get around. Downtown, the most convenient and recommended car rental company is Hertz (located near Harrahs Reno and Truckee River). From Mazda and Chevrolet’s eco-friendly cars to the all-around Jeep Wrangler, you’ll find something for every budget in their fleet. Open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
As its name suggests, Budget has some of the best prices in the Spark and Lake Tahoe area with compact and reliable Ford Focus and Fiesta kicking up the price at $50/day for the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta. You can actually save $5 if you book online, but given the uncertainty of the world right now, you might be better off paying at the counter. The Sparks agency is right next to the Fedex building, right on the Truckee River. Opening hours: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
